Byron Center, MI - There were 15 horses loose on the highway near Byron Center Wednesday morning, police say.

The Kent County Sheriff's Office says the horses got out from a boarding facility on Wilson Avenue, south of M-6 around 7:30 a.m. Many of the horses were spotted running down the highway, impeding traffic.

As of 8:30 a.m., all 15 horses have been captured and are safe, police say.

Some horses made it as far as M-6 and Eastern, M-6 and Kalamazoo and US-131 near Hanna Lake in Gaines Township.

The Sheriff's Office says nine deputies, MSP troopers and animal control were out on the highway trying to catch the horses.

The horses are being loaded onto a trailer and will be sent back to their facility. The right lane of westbound M-6 before Kalamazoo Avenue was blocked to traffic, but that's since reopened.
