Armed domestic violence suspect fatally shot in confrontation with deputies in Jurupa Valley
A man died early Saturday in a deputy-involved shooting in Jurupa Valley after he allegedly threatened a woman with a knife and refused to surrender during an encounter with deputies, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.
On Saturday, Feb. 3 at 3:48 a.m., deputies responded to the 3300 block of Avalon Street in Jurupa Valley involving a reported domestic dispute.
Deputies evacuated a woman who was being threatened by a man with a knife, and evacuated other family members, but the suspect refused to exit the residence, a sheriff’s news release said.
The Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau and the Crisis Negotiation Team responded to the scene and after negotiating for a while, SEB entered the residence.
The suspect left a room armed with a knife, and after multiple commands given to surrender, the suspect failed to comply, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred, the release said.
The suspect was shot and deputies rendered medical aid, but the suspect died at the scene, authorities said.
No deputies were injured during the encounter. The deputy who shot the suspect will be placed on paid administrative leave due to department policy, according to Saturday’s release.
The suspect was identified by coroner officials as Ernesto Rodriguez, 39, of Jurupa Valley.
