The incident was began in the 400 block of 47th Street around 10:20 p.m., when the San Diego Police Department received a call from a woman who said her ex-boyfriend was at the door of her apartment and threatening to shoot through it.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the woman let the man inside due to fear he would act on those threats. He then reportedly pointed the gun at her before grabbing their 11-month-old daughter and walking out the apartment.

SDPD officers arrived on scene as the suspect left the apartment, authorities said. When the suspect saw the officers, he reportedly fled on foot, running through the complex, the neighboring trolley tracks and into another apartment complex in the 200 block of 47th Street.

An officer saw the man hiding in a bush with the child at the apartment complex. According to the sheriff’s department, the officer then ordered the man to come out of the bush but refused, prompting the officer to fire his weapon.

The suspect, who was reportedly holding his child when the officer fired, was struck at least one time. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later underwent surgery and is expected to survive his injuries, authorities said.

The 11-month-old was unharmed in the shooting and was returned safely to her family. No additional injuries were reported in the incident.

The suspect has since been identified by the sheriff’s department as 29-year-old San Diego resident, Steffon Nutall. He was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, exhibiting a firearm in a threatening manner wand willful cruelty to a child with the potential for great bodily injury or death, according to authorities.
