Body and dashcam video shows police shooting in I-5 chase of man accused of killing 2, abducting son
Newly released body camera video shows Oregon State Police troopers firing back at a double-murder suspect on the side of Interstate 5 in April.
The suspect was also accused of abducting his 1-year-old son from eastern Washington, prompting an Amber Alert and a freeway chase in Oregon.
A clerk at a Portland Plaid Pantry spotted 39-year-old Elias Huizar with his son in the early morning hours of April 23. The clerk called 911.
Fourteen hours later, state troopers spotted Huizar’s car going south on Interstate 5.
The edited OSP video showed troopers performing a tactical move that caused Huizar to spin out.
Huizar, a former Yakima police officer, was accused of shooting and killing his former wife in Richland, Washington.
Police also said they later found Huizar’s girlfriend dead in his home. Her baby was with Huizar, and that was what prompted the Amber Alert.
After the troopers caused Huizar to lose control of his vehicle on I-5, Huizar and troopers exchanged gunfire.
“Fire! He’s firing! He’s firing!” a trooper can be heard on the video.
The trooper then returns fire, shooting through his front windshield. He then exits his vehicle and fires his gun again.
OSP said two troopers shot at Huizar, but the pursuit continued before Huizar crashed near Eugene.
Officers tried approaching him, but that was when officers said Huizar shot himself. He died at the scene.
No law enforcement personnel were injured.
Police rescued the baby.
