A man who deputies said choked and stabbed a woman with an ink pen, then attacked a K-9 dog and officers during his arrest, was jailed Monday. Indian River County sheriff’s officials credited K-9 Mako – who the suspect reportedly grabbed by the throat – and his handler Deputy Ricardo Ferrer with capturing the man.

Bobby Dean Martin, 38, of the 4700 block of 42nd Street, Vero Beach, was charged with aggravated battery, battery, battery on a police dog, three counts of battery on an officer, resisting arrest with violence and battery with prior conviction. Martin was held Tuesday at the Indian River County Jail without bond.

Sheriff’s officials released body camera footage Tuesday of Martin’s arrest. The more than two-minute long video captured a deputy deploying a Taser on Martin, which was unsuccessful.

Deputies responded to reports of a disturbance about 9 p.m. Monday at Martin’s residence. A woman told officers she was attacked earlier in the home by Martin, her boyfriend.

The woman told deputies Martin accused her of cheating on him. Martin then choked the woman and repeatedly punched her in the face, reports show.

The woman ran out of the back of the home. Martin caught up to the woman, choked her again and stabbed her multiple times with an ink pen before running from the residence, reports show.

Deputies said the woman had several red marks on her face and chest and that her right eye appeared to be swollen. Officers also saw puncture holes on the woman’s arms and upper shoulders, reports show.

Deputies set up a perimeter nearby when Martin ran from the woods toward officers. K-9 Mako brought Martin to the ground.

Martin kicked three deputies while he was being detained and after he was taken to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital for treatment for his injuries, reports show.

Deputies arrested Martin and booked him into the county jail. Martin has an arraignment at 8:45 a.m. Aug. 19, court records show.
