Jacksonville officer shoots through windshield during shootout with suspect during a traffic stop
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to an officer-involved shooting in the 1300 block of Golfair Boulevard on Thursday.
According to JSO, around 5 p.m. officers conducted a traffic stop in response to a window tint violation in the area.
While conducting the traffic stop, the passenger on the driver’s right side, later identified as Demetrick Manning, jumped out of the vehicle and began to run.
The officer who was speaking with the driver did not move while two officers gave chase, one in a vehicle and one on foot, JSO says.
A third officer saw Manning running across backyards and attempted to follow when Manning pulled out a gun and fired 10 shots at the officer’s vehicle. That officer then returned fire, JSO says.
JSO shared pictures of the gun Manning had, as well as the patrol vehicle that was shot at.
Afterward, the officer exited the vehicle and saw Manning sitting on the sidewalk with the handgun in his hand. Manning was told to drop the handgun and move away and when he failed to do so, officers deployed a Taser, according to JSO.
Manning was taken to the hospital to be evaluated for any injuries. No officers were hurt, and the driver cooperated throughout the incident, JSO confirmed.
Manning is a convicted felon who is prohibited from owning a firearm. He will be arrested for armed attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and several warrants for his violation of probation.
Golfair Boulevard was closed from Myrtle Avenue to Moncrief Road due to the incident.
Right before Action News Jax at 10, police chased an SUV through the crime scene of the officer-involved shooting in the 1300 block of Golfair Boulevard.
According to JSO, there was an auto theft investigation in the same area and the driver of the SUV is being arrested.
