Suspect charged with attempted first degree murder after shooting at Knoxville Police
The Knoxville Police Department released body camera and in-car footage Wednesday from the officer-involved shooting that happened near Chilhowee Park on Sunday, Dec. 24.
At around 5:20 a.m., a KPD officer was dispatched to the area of Lakeside Street and Ace Miller Way. It was reported that the occupant of a silver sedan had fired shots at nearby residences, crashed into a Chilhowee Park fence on Lakeside Street and ran from the car, according to KPD.
In the video, you can see the officer responding to the scene and having an encounter with the suspect, 38-year-old Leroy Brooks. After yelling at Brooks to show his hands, Brooks fired at Bailey and Bailey returned fire.
No one was struck or injured in the shooting, KPD said.
After shooting at the officer, Brooks was seen running into the woods off of Lakeside. While searching the area, KPD found him unresponsive. Officers then gave Brooks Narcan, and he regained consciousness and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to KPD.
After his release from the hospital and upon continued investigation, Brooks was charged with attempted first-degree murder, multiple firearm offenses and reckless endangerment, KPD said.
