Oneida County, WI - The Oneida County District Attorney has decided it will not file any charges against the deputy involved in a deadly chase in January in the Town of Newbold.

According to the DA’s report, on January 17 around 9 p.m., Oneida County Deputy Michael Bedish saw a man acting suspiciously at a gas station in the Town of Crescent. Bedish checked the license plate of the man’s black BMW, and found the driver, 28-year-old Matthew Johnson, had a revoked license and was prohibited from driving a motor vehicle for prior convictions.

Bedish attempted to pull over Johnson while driving north on Highway 47 at 9:14 p.m. Johnson pulled over and stopped on the shoulder of the highway. However, as soon as Bedish was getting out of his vehicle, Johnson drove away.

The report says the chase reached a top speed of 120 MPH.

Johnson continued northbound on Highway 47, nearing Bridge Road, and attempted to pass a vehicle along the right shoulder.

He then lost control of the vehicle and slid from the northbound lane into the southbound lane, crashing into a vehicle driving south.

Crews removed Johnson from the vehicle. EMS crews attempted life-saving measures, but Johnson was declared dead at the scene.
