Atlanta police release video of a brief chase of a street racer that ending in crash, arrest

On August 18, 2024, just before 2:00 a.m., an Atlanta Police Zone 6 officer attempted to stop a Chevy Camaro displaying a fraudulent license plate. The driver refused to stop and fled from the officer at a reckless and dangerous speed.
After canceling their pursuit of the vehicle, officers came across the vehicle, which had wrecked, and witnessed a suspect fleeing from the scene.
Officers were able to quickly detain the fleeing suspect without further incident. Further investigation determined that the detained suspect was the driver of the vehicle that fled from officers, and he had sideswiped another vehicle while attempting to elude police.
The suspect was identified as 19-year-old Derrick Martinez. He was charged with:

• Improper Lane Change
• Failure to Maintain Lane
• Too Fast for Conditions
• Hit and Run
• Failure to Display License on Demand
• Racing on Highways
• Taillights Violations
• Obstruction
• Affixing License Plate with Intent to Conceal or Misrepresent
• Display of License Plates Violation
• Attempting to Elude Police
• Possession of Marijuana
• Seatbelt Violation
