Bodycam footage shows Jefferson County deputy jump into action to deliver baby
A Jefferson County Sheriff's deputy will soon be awarded for going above and beyond for a pair of expecting parents.
While working at a crime scene in Birmingham, Sgt. Jeremy Barbin was approached by a man frantically asking for help because his pregnant girlfriend had gone into labor in a home nearby.
Barbin's bodycam footage shows him take off running after the man, strapping on a pair of gloves as he followed him into the residence. Inside, he found the soon-to-be mother and another woman screaming for help.
“As we walked into the home, we noticed that the woman was already in active labor,” Sgt. Barbin said. “We jumped into action to help deliver the baby and to safely unwrap the umbilical cord from the baby’s neck.”
After successfully delivering the baby, Barbin handed control of the situation over to arriving paramedics, who loaded her into an ambulance alongside her mother.
“Every day is different for our unit, and you never know what you may experience,” Barbin said. “I’m thankful that we were in the right place at the right time to help safely deliver this baby and to provide relief to both mom and dad.”
Speaking of mom, the new mother said that while she doesn't remember much of the ordeal, she's thankful Barbin was there to help, adding that her daughter is "doing good and eating good too."
“Sgt. Barbin went over and above the call of duty and stepped into a situation when he could have easily waited for someone else,” said Jefferson County Sheriff Mark Pettway. “He showcased his unwavering commitment to preserving life in a critical moment.“
Barbin is set to be awarded the “Lifesaving Medal” on Friday, Aug. 16, at the JCSO Academy Graduation.
