Columbus police releases body cam video of a shootout between suspect and SWAT team
The Columbus Division of Police identified the suspect injured in a shooting involving officers in the North Linden neighbor Sunday.
Police said they received a call just before 9 a.m. from someone claiming that an individual inside a residence in the 2900 block of Azelda Street had a firearm and said they wanted to "shoot it out with the police."
According to police, the suspect, 22-year-old Rodriguez Fitzgerald, had several violent felony warrants, including felonious assault, discharge into a habitation, aggravated menacing and domestic violence. The warrants prompted a response from the SWAT team.
While serving the warrant shortly before noon, police said Fitzgerald exited the residence with a firearm and began firing shots at officers at the scene. At least one officer returned fire, striking Fitzgerald.
The officer was identified as Rodney Mayberry, a 25-year veteran of the division and assigned to SWAT Green Team.
He was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital in critical condition. Police now describe his condition as "stable."
No officers were injured in the shooting, but a cruiser was struck multiple times, according to police. Fitzgerald will be charged with felonious assault against a police officer as a result of the incident.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is in investigation of the shooting.
