Body-worn camera footage of the fatal police shooting of Tyler May in a Fairview neighborhood street on June 3 was released by the Anchorage Police Department.
In July, the Office of Special Prosecutions found the officers involved — Anchorage Police Department Sergeant Jesse Frey, Officer Isaac Kimball, and Officer Nicholas Flechsing — were legally justified in their use of deadly force.
Videos show officers arriving on scene at the Anchorage Senior Center near East 19th Avenue and Karluk Street at 9:38 p.m. on June 3.
With weapons drawn, officers are heard discussing the whereabouts of the two suspects, May and his friend.
Officers wait for the two men to turn the corner of the building, at which point both are ordered to raise their hands. May’s friend is seen raising his hands and then sitting on the curb as instructed by police.
May is first seen with his hands near his waist in the front of his pants with his back turned to the officers before raising his hands. He’s told, “Get on the ground, or you’re going to get bit,” at which point May can be seen running from police.
A K9 is released after May is seen running, and in a short amount of time takes May to the ground.
While on the ground, May can be heard screaming while being bitten, and police can be heard telling him to “drop the gun.” Roughly seven shots are heard fired by police soon after.
Police said May, the second suspect, pulled out a handgun as he was being bitten by the K9 and was on the ground. Three officers then shot May, killing him. All three officers were wearing body cameras.
What isn’t captured in that body camera footage is the moment May allegedly points his gun at officers while on the ground being bitten by the K9.
Because May’s image is blurred at the time he’s shot, the public remains in a position of taking the department’s word on what exactly took place in that final moment.
