Richmond Police have released the body camera footage of a deadly officer-involved shooting in Church Hill two weeks ago.
Police say just before 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15, Richmond officers were called to the 2900 block of E. Broad Street for a mental health call.
Chief Rick Edwards says officers arrived at a home and attempted to negotiate with two people inside. The officers were told that the man had a knife.
RPD says a family member let them inside the home, and a man and woman were in a separate room and would not leave. In the video, the subject can be heard telling police that he’s armed, and he has a hostage.
The man, identified as Kyle Harris, 36, is also heard threatening to kill police if they came into the room where he was holding the woman hostage.
Units entered the room, and an officer fired his gun, hitting Harris. He was taken to the hospital, where he died early the following morning.
In the video, police show photos of a hatchet found at the scene and a knife found from the bushes outside of the home.
No other injuries were reported.
