[Old Story]

A driver who was fatally shot by police during a traffic stop in San Bernardino on Friday, Nov. 10, was suspected of attempting to pull a handgun on officers, authorities said.

Around 10:30 p.m., officers performed a traffic stop on a sedan after observing several vehicle code violations near the intersection of 16th Street and Mt. Vernon Avenue, according to a San Bernardino Police Department statement issued Monday. The driver, Darrell Fowler, did not have a valid driver’s license and was instructed by police to step out of the vehicle.

Fowler, a San Bernardino resident, refused to exit and began to reach toward his right side, police said.

He continued to reached for his right side even after an officer attempted to stop him, believing he might’ve been reaching for a weapon.

Fowler pushed the officer’s hand away and grabbed a handgun, prompting at least one officer to shoot him.

Officers provided medical aid to Fowler and found that he was wearing a gun holster, police said. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Two passengers in the vehicle when the shooting occurred were not injured, and were taken in by police for questioning.

Police said Fowler had an extensive criminal history.
