Oklahoma City police released more information Wednesday about an officer-involved shooting that left a suspect injured on Tuesday.

Police said a woman in Florida called 911 shortly before 10:30 a.m., stating a man was on her front porch in Oklahoma City. The woman told police the man was armed with a pistol and shouldn't have been at her home on NW 129th Terrace.

Police said the woman who called 911 was previously involved in a relationship with the man prior to her breaking it off.

When officers responded, they found 51-year-old Derek Dennis standing outside and they said he was still armed with a pistol. Officers said he refused commands to drop the pistol, forcing officers to back away and take a tactical position.

Police said they negotiated with Dennis for two hours with the hope of bringing the standoff to a peaceful conclusion. They said Dennis fired his pistol toward a nearby pond during that time period.

According to police, Dennis made a "threatening move" while still armed with a pistol just before 12:30 p.m. At that point, he was shot by officer Michael Poe.

Dennis was brought to an area hospital where he remains. After he gets released, police said he will be booked into jail on a complaint of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.

Nobody else was injured during the ordeal.

Poe, who has five years of service, was placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The officer-involved shooting was the department's fifth so far in 2022.
