Police release new footage of deadly police shooting outside Burbank Home Depot
The Burbank Police Department and California Department of Justice continue to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred on May 27, 2023, which resulted in the death of one man.
On May 27, 2023, at about 4:00 p.m., the Burbank Police Department received a phone call from a man claiming he was in a vehicle in the parking lot of Home Depot, located at 1200 South Flower Street, armed with a “25 Beretta,” saying he was going to shoot people. The man provided the Communications Center operator with the make and color of the vehicle he was in and the location in the parking lot.
When the officers arrived, they located the man still seated in the described vehicle and had a verbal exchange. The suspect then exited his vehicle, took a shooting stance, held an object in his hand as if it were a handgun, and pointed it at the officers, which precipitated an officer-involved shooting.
Officers immediately provided medical aid to the man and summoned paramedics. The Burbank Fire Department responded and transported the man to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The identity of the deceased is not being released at this time, pending identification by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.
Investigators continue to review body-worn camera footage, in-car camera footage, and surveillance footage of the incident. A search of the deceased and his vehicle did not reveal a firearm. The object the deceased pointed at the officers was determined to be a knife.
