A Liberty police officer and firefighters helped rescue a woman and her infant following a rollover crash.

The Liberty Police Department said officers responded Tuesday morning to the crash, where the vehicle ended up in an icy creek.

Police said the vehicle was on its driver’s side and the passengers were trapped inside.

One officer and an assistant fire chief approached the vehicle when the ice gave way and the officer became submerged up to his waist in the freezing water, according to police.

Police said the officer used a tool to cut open the windshield and free the driver.

Firefighters then removed the remainder of the windshield, and the officer was able to crawl through to the back seat and reach the six-month-old infant still secured in a car seat.

Police said the car seat was on the passenger side of the vehicle and was not exposed to the freezing water.

The officer was able to remove the infant safely from the car seat and crawl back through the vehicle.

The woman and her infant were taken to the hospital for treatment. Police said the officer was also taken to the hospital due to prolonged exposure in the frigid water.
