Flagler County Sheriff's deputy plunges into pond to rescue dog named Elroy
-----
A Flagler County Sheriff's Office deputy rescued a dog from a pond in Palm Coast, although the pooch didn't make it easy as he tried to flee and elude the lawman as he closed in.
Deputies responded to the pond in Palm Coast's W section Saturday after someone called about a dog in distress, according to a social media post.
Once there, they found a woman who went out in a kayak to attempt a rescue, but was unable to collar the dog.
Deputy Alex Wolfe borrowed the woman's kayak, and another deputy pushed him out into the water. As the kayak slid into the pond, Wolfe wondered about what else might be in the water, saying, "My luck, there's going to be an alligator in here," according to the video. Another deputy could be heard saying the dog might take a bite out of Wolfe.
The dog's name is Elroy, the sheriff's office stated. And Elroy didn't bite. But Elroy did make a swim for it. Wolfe paddled the kayak toward the dog, and the pooch dog paddled away. Wolfe continued the pursuit, plunging into the pond to grab Elroy.
The deputy carried the wet dog and slogged through the pond, carrying the animal to dry land.
Deputies found that Elroy had a training collar, and he was turned over to animal control. Elroy and his owner were later reunited.
