Weekend Cinema - Mainline Diesel Engine Building
An awesome little film from 1948 of the making of the first mainline diesel engine in Great Britain of the time. Even back then the writing was on the wall for the reign of the mighty one hundred year old technology of steam driven locomotives. The authorities had looked at the diesels that were being produced in the United States and decided it was the way to go in the overall scheme to eventually have a completely electric powered railway but, in the meantime, Diesel Traction was the way to go. So, in 1948 the LMS Railway (London Midland and Scotland) in conjunction with the Engerlish Electric Company joined forces to produce the first ever v16 cylinder, 17 ton lump for locomotive Number 10000. This is that story of that endeavour..
