Helicopter footage shows police take man into custody after attempted abduction, multi-county pursuit
By: Authorities said a Virginia man is facing multiple charges after he led police on a chase and tried to carjack at least two people -- and it was all caught on camera.
The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday said 44-year-old Joseph C. Daniel, of Leesburg, was driving a Hummer that was reported stolen when he sped away from officers a day prior.
The sheriff's office said they responded to a call around 2 p.m. about an abduction in progress.
A news release notes deputies arrived at the scene and tried to pull the suspect over, but he ignored them. He then sped away, with authorities following him.
During the chase, he hit multiple vehicles during the pursuit, according to the sheriff's office.
The pursuit, said authorities, continued on Interstate 495 north.
About 45 minutes into the chase, the sheriff's office said the driver stopped and got out of the Hummer before trying to carjack a person.
Footage shows the suspect, later identified as Daniel, run up to at least one other SUV and try to open the driver's side door before he's tackled by two deputies.
Daniels was then taken into custody.
The sheriff's office said Daniel had open warrants out of Loudoun County for two counts of possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, fleeing and eluding, driving without a license, and three counts of probation violation.
He was also charged with carjacking, robbery, hit-and-run, felony disregard police command to stop, driving without an operator’s license, and reckless driving.
The sheriff's office said no one was hurt.
Authorities said the Hummer was reported stolen in Chantilly, on March 16. It had been repainted from green to black.
Daniel is being held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center on no bond.
The sheriff's office said they continue to investigate the initial abduction call, adding that multiple charges are pending.
