The Burning Question..
an interesting little filum from the Southern Railways Filum Unit... it's the early 1940's and Britain as usual has stuck it's nose into international affairs and has found itself embroiled in a World War which not only makes the country devoid itself of every bar of gold it once owned but it had little hope of winning 'the war' without massive help from the USA. (Incidentally, the UK has only just repaid every dollar it loaned from the US between the mid 1940's right up until the 1960's). The real 'Burning Question' being, as stated, everything costs power and in the UK's remit it's coal for that is the only 'power' the country had in reserve. But the on going war where the UK was supplying nearly every waring country with assets to fight the war was draining the country at an enormous rate of production and use. Many tanks had a lifespan often measured in hours but in their haste to 'crush the Germans' the UK ended up supplying all of Europe Russia and China with war-matériel it could not afford.., hence, men with bowler hats going about their business in getting everyone to save save and save... would the million or more fighting men and women had been so keen to help our 'our friends and allies' knowing that in a few short decades some self-serving lack lustre and feckless politicians would sell out from beneath their very feet the country they did so much to 'fight for'. Would the hundreds of thousands who now reside in European War Graves as large as the eye can see would they have wanted to sacrifice themselves for the country to be given over to minority groupings and often groups that despise what they once fought for.... 'Just a thought.
Such wonderful War propaganda eh!
