NOPD releases video of officer-involved shooting during getaway
The New Orleans Police Department released new video of an officer shooting from Dec. 4.
A department press release states 27-year veteran Lt. Dan Anderson shot at a suspect twice as the suspect hit multiple NOPD vehicles while attempting to get away.
The shooting happened at the intersection of Basin and St. Louis Streets.
The department’s release states officers identified a car that had been reported stolen. Multiple vehicles surrounded the vehicle at the intersection.
Chief Anne Kirkpatrick said the suspect’s vehicle reversed into an unmarked NOPD patrol car, turned right and hit a second unmarked vehicle before crashing into a third unrelated vehicle before getting away.
Anderson’s marked vehicle was in front of the suspect’s car. The video does not show Anderson shooting, but two gunshots can be heard.
The department said the suspect has not been identified.
Kirkpatrick said the shooting is being investigated, but Anderson has been cleared to return to duty after being evaluated by the department.
“We always put the officers into an administrative time-out, they’re seen by our psychologists to make sure they’re o.k.,” she said.
Kirkpatrick declined to comment on the justification of the shooting.
“I have promised every single officer just like you, you get due process. That means all pieces of the puzzle need to be in place, meaning a final investigation before I will comment. I have taken that practice always,” she said.
The department’s release stated there were no reported injuries. The suspect’s car has been recovered.
