Louisville officer shot in the chest during shooting at Shawnee Park
Officer Joshua Pickering and suspect Herbert Lee were shot during the incident. LMPD was attempting to approach Lee, who they knew had several outstanding warrants against him. When officers approached Lee, he can be seen pulling a gun and firing at officers. There were five officers, including Pickering, at the scene. A bullet hit Pickering in the chest, but he wasn’t seriously hurt because his bulletproof vest protected him.
LMPD officers can be seen firing several shots heard yelling for Lee to drop his weapon. Lee refuses to drop his gun. Lee eventually falls to the ground and officers can approach him. He has been shot and they begin trying to help him until EMS arrives.
Officer Nicholas Hollkamp finds the gun Lee allegedly fired at officers and unloads the weapon. LMPD says the recovered gun was stolen.
Pickering was released from the hospital and LMPD says Lee will recover from his injuries.
The five officers at the scene have been identified as Officers Richard Williams, Daniel Burnett, Joel Voelker, Nicholas Hollkamp and Joshua Pickering. LMPD says all are paid administrative leave.
The shooting took place at Shawnee Park just as the annual Dirt Bowl was wrapping up. Kentucky State Police is handling the investigation. LMPD has said Lee will face several charges including attempted murder of a police officer.
