NYPD officer shoots, critically injures driver after chase
An NYPD officer shot a man in the Bronx Sunday night, officials said.
The shooting happened near East 165th Street and Boston Road in Morrisania around 8 p.m. The NYPD confirmed one person was shot inside a vehicle. Three other people in the black SUV were taken to the 42nd Precinct after the shooting
The wounded driver was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said.
The driver had sped through several red lights before the shooting, officials said. Officers on patrol noticed what was happening, drove ahead and parked in front of the SUV in an unmarked vehicle. Their warning lights were on. Another unmarked vehicle approached from behind.
When officers got out of their vehicles to approach, the driver backed up toward approaching officers, police said. An officer opened fire, striking the driver.
Two officers were taken to a hospital for evaluation. Body camera footage from the officers was being reviewed.
