Officers arrested three people on late Sunday night, after reports of a weapon being brandished. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety released footage of the arrest- and ensuing struggle- on Tuesday.
On September 4, officers say they heard about a person waving a firearm outside of an apartment complex at 123 North Sage Street. However, before officers could get to the scene, it was reported that the person had moved inside the apartment building and was now engaged in a fight with another person.
KDPS officers arrived on scene and found three people in a stairwell. The group consisted of a 24-year-old woman, a 24-year-old man, and a 22-year-old man.
KDPS says that after officers tried to secure the firearm, a physical altercation broke out.
After the altercation, the three were arrested and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.
The woman was charged with one count of resisting and obstructing arrest. The 24-year-old man was charged with one count of resisting and obstructing arrest, two counts of resisting and obstructing arrest causing injury, and one count of felony firearm. The 22-year-old man was charged with one count of resisting and obstructing arrest and two counts of resisting and obstructing arrest causing injury.
The altercation is currently being reviewed by the Office of Professional Standards for compliance with police and the law. This is standard for use-of-force incidents.
The arrests come after a weekend in Kalamazoo, during which three people were shot, one fatally, in what Acting Police Chief David Boyson called "an unacceptable level of violence in our community."
