San Antonio police shot and killed a man after they say he fled from a traffic stop. They had attempted to pull over a vehicle with two occupants around 1 a.m. in the 4400 block of West Commerce Street near Southwest 29th Street.
According to the SAPD release, the vehicle slowed down and the suspect in the passenger seat jumped out. One officer chased the suspect on foot while yelling commands. The second officer driving the patrol vehicle drove toward the suspect and quickly got out of the vehicle.
The suspect continued to run, SAPD said, then turned toward the officers and pointed a gun in their direction. One of the officers yelled out when he observed the gun, and both officers fired several rounds at the suspect, striking him.
The suspect, later identified as Steven Lopez, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured. A loaded handgun was recovered near the suspect, SAPD said.
