OSHP releases body cam of Cincinnati police officer pulled over and charged with OVI
Newly released bodycam footage shows authorities stopping a Cincinnati police officer who was later charged with OVI.
Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers pulled over Justin Shields around 1 a.m. on April 14 in Clermont County, according to court records.
Shields is a CPD District 4 officer, the department confirms. He says in the bodycam footage he has been with the department for around a year and a half.
The traffic citation claims Shields was going 80 mph on Interstate 275 in a 65 mph zone.
Shields can be seen telling the trooper he had “literally nothing” to drink and that he was only taking a friend home.
The citation shows Shields refused a breathalyzer at the scene.
The bodycam footage shows the trooper try to bait Shields into taking the breathalyzer upon Shields’ repeated insistence that he hasn’t been drinking.
“I have had nothing to drink,” Shields says.
“So you’d blow triple zeros then,” the trooper responds.
Shields shakes his head, demurring. “You and me both know how it goes,” Shields says.
Later, the trooper says he can still smell the alcohol on Shields’ breath. “I can smell a strong odor of alcoholic beverage,” the trooper says.
“You cannot,” Shields replies.
Shields then consents to a field sobriety test. The trooper arrests him following the test.
Shields has pleaded not guilty. His next court date is April 27.
