Bodycam shows teens in vacant apartment involved in gunfight with Houston officers
-----
Houston, TX - Body-worn camera video was released Monday after a shooting between police officers and two teens accused of trespassing at a southeast Houston apartment complex in February, police say. One of those teens was shot.
According to HPD Assistant Chief J. Skelton, police were initially called out to the apartment complex at 8360 Park Place, which is near Galveston Road, at around 1 p.m. on Feb. 1.
Skelton said apartment management learned the suspects, a 15-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy, who was identified later as Alexi Otoniel Martinez, were in a vacant apartment.
Officers who responded went with managers to the apartment. After knocking on the door, a manager used a key to open the unit for police, and that's when Skelton said the officers were immediately met by a suspect with a gun.
The officers retreated. Minutes later, Skelton said the suspects broke out a window in the back of the unit to get out.
Body camera video shows someone started firing on officers as soon as they climbed out of the window. Officers fired back, hitting Martinez.
Martinez and the 15-year-old were both taken to the hospital for treatment. Martinez was being treated for a gunshot wound. The 15-year-old suffered a cut from the window.
The body-worn camera video can be seen here.
The officers weren't hurt. They both work out of Eastside Patrol. One is a 30-year veteran, the other a 13-year veteran.
The two officers were on administrative duty during the investigation, which is standard procedure.
The suspects' conditions aren't known at this time. Martinez was conscious when he was taken to the hospital.
