Barricaded suspect pointed gun at MCSO deputies before being shot
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office released body camera footage Monday of a standoff with an armed suspect on August 7.
Reports from the MCSO said that deputies responded to a domestic violence call near Perryville Road and Olive Avenue in Waddell around 7:30 p.m.
Officials said that a man, later identified as Mario Ruiz Avila, entered his estranged wife’s home with a gun and threatened her, their three children and their grandparents. His wife, the oldest child and grandfather, managed to escape from the house.
Deputies responded, set up a perimeter, and gave Avila several commands to exit the residence; he refused, according to MCSO. During negotiations, Avila pointed a firearm at the deputies. An MCSO deputy fired one round, striking Avila, MCSO said.
MCSO's SWAT team was able to enter the house and arrest Avila without further incident, authorities said.
MCSO released body camera video that shows Avila's two children and their grandmother were hiding in the closet, contrary to Avila's statement that he was holding one of his children during the incident.
Avila was found to have a gunshot wound and was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
MCSO said he has since been booked on several felony charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and burglary.
