DPS release video of a teenage smuggler who crashes into police during a high speed chase
A Laredo teen led state police on a pursuit in a vehicle loaded with migrants, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
A trooper attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Honda passenger car on Cuatro Vientos Boulevard at about 5 p.m. Jan. 19. The driver, later identified as Ricardo Hernandez, was reported to be involved in human smuggling.
A chase ensued when the driver refused to stop. Hernandez eventually led troopers to the parking lot of H-E-B near San Dario Avenue and Del Mar Boulevard.
Hernandez then decided to drive on the wrong side of San Dario. A trooper used his unit to stop and disable the suspect vehicle to prevent injury to other motorists. Hernandez’s vehicle was disabled, authorities said. He and four migrants were detained.
Hernandez, 18, was arrested and charged with four counts of smuggling of persons with likelihood of serious bodily injury or death, evading arrest on foot, evading arrest with vehicle, and aggravated assault against a public servant.
