Kalamazoo Township, MI - A police officer working to take a wanted person into custody Thursday morning was hurt during an attempted arrest near the campus of Western Michigan University.

The officer was in the area of Howard Street just south of Michigan Avenue around 11 a.m. on March 27 looking for a wanted individual. When officers found the person, they pulled out a gun, according to the Kalamazoo Township Police Department (KTPD).

It is not clear how many shots were fired, but one officer and the subject were hurt. Both were taken to the hospital.

The suspected reportedly hit his girlfriend and held her at gunpoint.

KTPD says they tracked down the suspect behind the Kalamazoo Public Schools administration building on Howard Street. Police ordered him to stop, but he ran off.

We're told officers pursued him and the suspect opened fire, hitting an officer in the leg. Officers returned fire, injuring the suspect.

The officer is listed in stable condition, according to KTPD. The suspect is currently in critical condition.
