[Old Story]
A Rialto man armed with a handgun was fatally shot by police after leading an officer on a brief pursuit in San Bernardino on Wednesday, Dec. 27, authorities said.
Just before 7 a.m., 28-year-old Robert Brown was stopped by a motorcycle officer for a vehicle code violation in the area of 7th Street and Sierra Way, near Seccombe Lake Park, according to the San Bernardino Police Department. Brown led the officer on a brief pursuit before stopping his vehicle a few blocks away and fleeing on foot along the 1200 block of Pepper Tree Lane.
Brown jumped over a fence into a residential yard, armed with a handgun, police said.
He ignored the officer’s commands to drop the weapon and get down onto the ground, continuing to flee into other residents’ yards.
The officer shot the suspect at least once during the foot pursuit, police said.
Brown was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. The weapon, a 9mm handgun, was reported stolen from out of the state.
Brown had a no bail warrant for his arrest, but information on his criminal history was not immediately available.
