Bodycam video released from shooting that injured Pima County deputy during foot chase
-----
Video from a shooting that injured a Pima County deputy on Aug. 13 has been released.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said 39-year-old Gabriel Altamirano shot the deputy in the leg at the start of a days-long crime spree. Video of that shooting can be watched below.
Altamirano has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, domestic violence, burglary, and aggravated assault. He could also face attempted kidnapping charges for an incident that happened before he was arrested.
Altamirano’s alleged crime spree began in the 5000 block of West Jeffrey Road, which is just south of Valencia Road, on Aug. 13.
Deputies were called to the area for a domestic violence incident involving Altamirano.
Deputies spotted a vehicle, but it refused to stop and crashed into another vehicle near Jeffrey and Camino De Oeste.
Two men, including Altamirano, jumped out of the vehicle and deputies chased them. That is when Altamirano allegedly shot Deputy Augustine Gonzalez.
Gonzalez, a 29-year veteran of the PCSD, was hit in the leg but was able to shoot back. Gonzalez was later discharged from the hospital and is recovering at home. Altamirano was not injured.
Altamirano got away after the shooting, but the second man was taken into custody.
Sheriff Chris Nanos has described the shooting as “nothing more than an ambush.”
Altamirano also allegedly broke into several homes in the area while on the run.
On Aug. 18, deputies were flagged down about a possible kidnapping near Irvington and Midvale Park Road. Altamirano was identified as the suspect in that incident and was taken into custody without incident hours later.
Nanos said Altamirano has a criminal record that includes weapons violations, drug possession, and aggravated assault.
