Sarasota Police Department has released the body camera videos from the five officers involved in Monday’s officer-involved shooting.
The shooting involved a Sarasota Police officer, who pulled the vehicle over knowing that the car had warrants from Sarasota County officials.
The individual in the vehicle was William Pickett. Sarasota Police confirm Pickett was wanted on an outstanding warrant for the Feb. 24 robbery of a Fifth-Third Bank. Pickett was wanted on charges of robbery with a firearm and grand theft of more than $10,000 but less than $20,000.
The shooting occurred just before 8 a.m. on Monday near the intersection of U.S. 41 and University Parkway. Sarasota Police confirmed that one of its officers initiated a traffic stop on a car that was known to be affiliated with Pickett.
During the traffic stop, shots were fired.
The suspect’s vehicle did end up in a nearby body of water. Divers went in to the water to investigate and the car was pulled to land.
Sarasota Police confirm Pickett is dead. The exact cause of death has not been made public.
