Body cam video shows night rescue of woman from a frozen Florence pond
-----
New video from Florence shows the tense moments when police rescued a woman who fell through thin ice.
The woman tried rescuing her dogs from a pond and then found herself in the same situation.
At 6:40 Sunday night, Boone County Sheriff's Sgt. Jonathan Ball and a Florence police officer rushed to a frozen pond on the Rio Grande Circle.
"Hold on, I'm coming," Sgt. Ball said. "Does anybody got a decent light."
In the freezing cold, Ball gets on his hands and knees and quickly starts crawling across 100 feet of ice. But only inches separate him and the dark water below.
Seconds later, they reach the woman and, on unstable ice, use everything in their power to get her out. The two men start dragging her as fast as they can.
The Sheriff's Department says she was in the water for about 10 minutes before the rescue. She was taken to UC medical center and was later released. Both her dogs were rescued and are fully recovered tonight.
"Did you get my dogs?" the woman said as she was pulled from the water.
"Yep, got your dog," an officer said.
The Sheriff's Department commends Sgt. Ball and the Florence officer for their bravery, saying parts of the pond were breaking beneath their feet when they saved the woman.
