Both of my grandfathers died at the front.
My mother's older brother fought in the partisans during the occupation. After the liberation of the city by the Soviet Army, he was detained by the NKVD as 'a person of military age who was in the occupied territory,' but they quickly figured out that he was not an accomplice of the Nazis. His documents and a short story are in the city museum.
